Description
Edit: Thank you guys for the DD! That's very awesome!
This monster of a project represents most of a year's work. Each dragon took about twenty hours to complete, give or take, and all the bits and bobs in the background took about twenty hours, too. I spread it out throughout 2012 and this year just so I wouldn't go completely crazy (and so that my drawing arm could rest!).
This is part 1 of a commission for my parents. Mom said she didn't have a favorite color, as she likes all of my Stone Dragon designs, so I thought I would try something really, really ambitious and do the twelve basic colors in the color wheel. That meant that I would need twelve different dragon designs, so I decided to use the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. Pictured here are the snake, dragon, rabbit, tiger, ox, and rat. The cool colors will have the other six animals.
This picture is the absolute largest colored pencil project I have ever done. It is 18 x 36 inches.
Yes, ALL of the coloring was done with Prismacolor pencils. I went through one and a half black pencils on the background alone. I also used gold paint pen throughout, and it shimmers when I turn it in the light.
I also used a lot of shiny rocks and other things: There's bronzite, carnelian, two different kinds of agate, and goldstone. I also used white and gold freshwater pearls, plastic and metal beads, and a boatload of sticky-backed rhinestones.
What you see here is a digital composite of a traditional medium artwork. I scanned in the drawing before I added the embellishments, and it required ten scans to get all of the dragons in there. I then scanned each of the stones and other bits, then placed them onto the assembled dragon image.
I'm glad it's all done now... Cuz' it's time to do it all again in COOL COLORS!
Here's the cool color set:
