Art ripping alert: Dragon artists be aware: UPDATE

Fri May 29, 2009, 4:29 AM
  • Mood: Optimism
Update for 29 May 2009: It looks like the Zahareth pages have been removed from the Freewebs host environment. Thank you all for your prompt attention on this matter, and for looking out for your fellow artists!

One of my friends identified a website that has taken dragon artwork from many, many different sources, professional and amateur alike. If you're a dragon artist, please go examine this website to see if you've had any work taken:

There are quite a few different pages with dragon artwork on them. If you find that you have had work taken, go to the "Join or comment" page and leave a *polite* request to remove your work. You don't need to be a member of the website to leave a comment.

If you have trouble with the "join or comment" link, then try going back to the web host's main site. They have a section for copyright abuse, and they'll need some information from the affected individuals in order to proceed, but it's all spelled out pretty simply here:

At least they're not claiming, "Hey! I drew this! Isn't it awesome?! I spent days on it!"

Small consolation, but at least it's not art THEFT... Just... using without permission. >_<

I'm sure other dragon artists will appreciate you informing them!

I believe in Jesus Christ as my Savior. If you do too and aren't scared to admit it, then copy and paste this in your signature.

Thanks Rachael! That's actually a good idea, doing the journal thing XD I don't know why I never thought of it. Kudos to you for being so resourceful!

I know personally for me, the join or comment link doesn't work. So some people might need to watch out for that. It might just be my dial-up making the site go wonky.

Ouch - I didn't see another way of contacting the site owner besides the join-or-comment link. Might have to break down the URL to get to the folks who manage the server itself.

Yep, he got one of mine, and just about every other well-known dragon artist as well.

Theft is when someone takes something without asking permission, whether he claims credit for it or not. It's a lesser evil, to be sure, but it's still one of my major pet peeves.

I can spot quite a few of the artists here. I'll let them know.

.. Ah. This, IMO, falls under the case which is:
"Ohh! Lots of dragon Art Work! Since it's found / hosted online or on the internet, it's free to take and free to use even without crediting the source!"

Yes, that's what it looked like to me, too. Thing is, most younger users don't know copyright law and so they don't realize that what they're doing is wrong. The site moderator, however, should be aware of the legality of his actions since he's responsible for the content of his site. He uses a Ruth Thompson dragon as his personal image... somehow I doubt that he understands the law.
