Artist's Comments

I've managed to get thte shiny gold stuff under better control, and I think the end result works out even better than this guy's predecessor. :D

I used the semiprecious stone jasper as my color reference. Yes, I'm going to do a whole bunch of these. Lapis lazuli and opal will be the next pair, I think.

Prismacolor pencils and gold opaque ink, plus some Photoshop tweaking for digital shininess that the scanner TOTALLY ATE.

Companion to:
Stone Dragon 01: Jade Fury
Stone Dragon 03: Lapis Lazuli Breeze
Stone Dragon 04: Opal Sun
Stone Dragon 05: Onyx Shadows
Stone Dragon 06: Malachite Vanguard

Original artwork: available - $300

Prints:
8x10 inches for $15
11x14 inches for $30
16x20 inches for $50

Rachel,
A thought on scanning. It seems that the direct, all-encompassing light of a scanner would be exactly wrong for picking up the sheen of of the shiny gold stuff. I wonder whether a vertical easel combined with a camera on tripod might do better. Then you could control the angle and intensity of the lighting.

An excellent suggestion. That'll be the next thing I try. Gotta wait until Christmas, though, for a digicam. :D

I've done some art shoots before; we had a couple of classes on it when I was in college. We used those really bright tungsten lights and special film and everything - the pictures of the pictures turned out great, but it was an expensive process. Any more, I don't mind having to tweak my artwork as I work with the tools at hand, but I definitely want to try some daylight camera shots of this art-with-shiny-stuff to see if I can pick up the lustre effect a bit better.

Thanks very much!

Yeah, I got the gold to behave better on this picture - I had a better feel for what I was doing this time. :-)

You managed to hit up a lot of my most favorite colors in this piece. I love it just as much as the last one, nay, even more. All the twists and turns in his body have a sort of confusing Escher-like quality, and I love that.
