Snakes Don't Dance

Description

This is a work from late 2002. And let me be the first to say it:

The Phoenix gal's anatomy is all kinds of twisted. I got carried away and must have been thinking of Silly Putty or something, I swear. I'm reworking a similar character for another piece, so you will be able to see that I have improved on my female anatomy!

Backstory: You see, I was dancing around in my studio to the Mortal Kombat soundtrack, and I thought to myself, "Hmmm... If my nether appendages were as a serpent's, I bet I'd have significantly more trouble dancing."

So I had to work out this problem in my head. It turns out that snakes DO dance, and that this particular Naga really knows how to get down and boogie with his bad self. I think he even has the Phoenix Lady convinced!

I did a light underpainting with thinned acrylics, then used colored pencil to do the humanoids. I taped off the characters, then put in the Art Deco background. When I tore off the tape, most of the colored pencil came up with it. (ARRRRGH! Background and masking must be done FIRST! Hindsight is always 20/20!) And so I recolored most of the character details again.

Original artwork: available - $200

Prints:
8x10 inches for $15
11x14 inches for $30
16x20 inches not available

I also recommend making a less "harsh" cut between the serpentine and humanoid body parts of the naga/Quetzl. Most of the myths I've read describe them as being a far more natural shift from humanoid to snake, not the half and half "snake centaurs" you usually see depicted in modern art. Do a search for Kova for one example of a decent blend.

Having said that I greatly commend your understanding of naga tail length. Keeping that humanoid body upright is *work* and I see a lot of really waaaaaaaay too short tails on naga. Heck even this guy's tail is a wee short but at least it's workable. Those folks who draw naga that are maybe 3x human length just don't seem to get that the poor critters would likly faceplant just trying to hold up their ribcages ;)
