Ride the Twilight Hour

This is a commissioned piece for a friend, Angela. She had a pretty solid idea about what she wanted, and provided me some excellent descriptions and feedback as we worked on the design of her spirit guides, the white dragon and the black eagle. She wanted that dragon to be closer to snow-white than to the kind of iridescent white that it would be with sunset illumination like that. So if it reads a bit off, color-wise, it's her fault. She LIKES it this way.

The landscape was far more challenging. While I can read character into an animal or a person, I have a lot more trouble reading character into mountains, lake, trees, sun, and sky. I looked through quite a few different kinds of photographs of mostly the Appalachian mountain range, trying to get a sense of the shape of the mountains, particularly the way the look against a sunrise or sunset. The drawing you see here, though significantly *softer* than the Appalachians, is the result of taking in all of that visual stimulation.
