This is the very last artwork of 2012!

This is my Secret-Santa project for :icon10-sec-to-draw-a-gun:. He has a Deep Sea Dragon that I used as a point of reference, but as usual I wandered off in a slightly different direction. I did keep the shapes of body parts and scales very close to his original design, but then I went crazy with the colors. As much work as it was, I also really enjoyed this project. I learned how to draw a new type of scale pattern, and I used a bunch of colors that I don't usually use together. Great fun!

Created with watercolor and Prismacolor pencils.

I use Prismas and I can never achieve the effects you can...
How do you blend so well?

I find that I need a paper surface with a bit of tooth - velum surface is about as smooth as I can go and still get the right blending effects. Smooth surface or hot pressed illustration board tends to be *too* smooth, while medium-toothed drawing paper and cold-pressed illustration board are just right. Velum surface bristol board also works well.

I typically use three or four separate colors for my gradation effects, and I tend to really dig in with the colors so that it's almost like sculpting a layer of very fine clay (though it's wax, of course; the texture makes me think of clay more than anything else). I squish the colors together in several layers until I get the degree of smoothness that I want. There's a lot of back-and-forth to get the shadows dark enough and the highlights light enough to read properly.

Thanks very much. This was a very challenging piece because of all those scales, but I like the way it turned out. :D
