I consider this one more drawing than painting; most of the work went into the dragon with colored pencils, while the background was just a color wash.

But how did I get that weird texture? WAX PAPER! I crumpled wax paper and laid it atop the wet watercolor, then laid a book on top of that. The next day, it had dried with these great patterns that you see here. I drew the dragon in later.

I wanted an odd body position for this guy, and I drew him really without much thought and no reference. I'm just durned lucky it turned out as well as it did, though that edge-on wing still strikes me as awkward.

Completed in late 2000.

Original artwork: available - $125.

Prints: not available.

Wow, this is crazy. I absolutely love the color and the mood. Fantastic work.

I like using wax paper for that kind of effect. Some times i'll just use regular paper too, but it's just not the same. The coloring on this is amazing, especially on the right wing. It looks like there are layers to it.

Wow, that wax paper left some really beautiful patterns. That's too cool.

I like its pose and thingies. All like, twisted. It's as good as that last one that I'd commented on. :3

i don't like getting my hands wet
ah i remember seeing this picture on elfwood and gawking at the great motion you captured in the picture. It may be an old picture by now, but it's still lovely :)

LOL - I actually had Mythomorphosis posted up to DA about a week before it hit Elfwood, and it's only been in its completed state for about three weeks. It's still qualifiably new! :-)

I took a watercolor class in college, and we did some experimenting with "special effects" that we could achieve with watercolor paintings. Laying crumpled wax paper over the painting and allowing it to dry made some really neat effects, and so I reused the idea here.

I haven't used it since then, though, come to think of it. Hmmm....
