For the second painting in the Jazzdragon series, I chose to try a new dragon position - as if our dancing dragon was going into a power dive. The background you see here is one of the first times I tried applying salt on a non-class-related finished piece of art, and I found that I was very pleased with the marbled effect that it produced.

I added the geometric shape to kind of "herd" the colors and to give the eye something to latch onto as it moves around the image. This is the first time I tried THAT little trick, too, and it seems to have been fairly successful. But I would need to experiment with geometry a little more.

This dragon was painted in 2000. I used watercolor (with salt) and colored pencil.

Original artwork: available - $125.

Prints: not available.

This is amazing! You're really very talented. The background effects are awesome, but my favorite part (strangely) is the curly little end of the tail.
I really love the vivid colors, and that salt thing worked really well.

I make a big, wet mess of watercolor, then I sprinkle salt on top.

If the watercolor is sopping wet like a small puddle, the salt dissolves and the effect looks wavery, kind of like marble. If the watercolor is a little bit more dry - just damp instead of sopping wet - the salt will make little starbursts.

The effect will work only a little bit on thin paper - to get it to work well, you need really thick paper - watercolor paper or bristol board (which is like a heavy cardstock paper).

If you thin the acrylics down to a watery consistency, you can use salt with them, too. The background of the Phantom of the Opera picture was partly acrylic and salt.
