I did this as a commissioned piece for a nice man, Charles, who likes to photograph woodpeckers, among many other things.
He gave me free reign with the image itself, saying only that he wanted a big, mean-looking dragon with red eyes. He also wanted it to be 18 x 24 inches in size... Yowza.
Well, I worked with this dragon on and off for most of a year before I was finally satisfied with the picture.
I consider it more painting than drawing, though what you see here is mostly colored pencil. The underpainting was done in watercolor, and most of the color work was done at that stage. The colored pencil was used to enhance shadow, contrast and color saturation more than anything else. The pegasuses were just slipped in there as a size reference.
Original art: Sold
Prints: 8x10 inches for $15. 11x14 inches for $30. 16x20 inches not available.
I seem to be attracted to your work... Anyway, this is awesome, like usual! This is one heck of a fearful looking dragon! Seriously scary! Everything about this is very skilled and professional, from the convincing anatomy of the dragon to the detail of the colorful sky and the depth and motion of the water. Fantastic, literally!
amazing work indeed, definatly adding this fellow to my favs. Your control of colored pencil would have fooled me, this picture is just as good as many professional oil paintings
Wow, that is stunning. I love the background colors. So vivid.
