If you've read some of HP Lovecraft's (and later August Derleth's) Mythos fiction, you'll probably recognize this guy right away. This is the Haunter of the Dark, with the great, three-lobed, burning-red eye. He's an avatar of Nyarlathotep, the Crawling Chaos, and among my favorite weird beasties in this particular circle of literature.
This is a sketch I did over two lunch periods. There's probably about an hour and a half's work in it.
Lovecraft isn't everybody's thing. If you like really florid Victorian prose and a moody, broody, nihilistic atmosphere, and characters that die greusome deaths or go stark raving mad, and lots of tentacled boogums, then you'll probably like HP Lovecraft. If you want a good place to start, go for a book published by Del Rey called "The Best of HP Lovecraft: Bloodcurdling Tales of Horror and the Macabre".

Nice. I like your take on the Haunter of the Dark. The head reminds me of those faceted fly-eyes. It's nice and different than the other ones I've seen.
The literary description of Haunter was always among my favorites of Nyarly's thousand faces, mostly for the sheer weirdness of it. (Not to mention the fact that the story was just cool.) The form I depicted Haunter in here was inspired by a color image of him I glimpsed in the Call of Cthulhu Creature Companion (I think), but I thought he needed more tentacles and a perch, so there we go.

That's a really awesome drawing. U perfectly capture the Windowless steeple of the Church of Starry wisdom, and I just love the drawing of the haunter himself. (My personal favourite of all of Nyarlathotep's avatars). Awesome work! Im faving it!
Oh, and by the way, he might not want to stay out there too long. It gets awful bright in the mornings...
