Black Sun Dragon by rachaelm5 Black Sun Dragon by rachaelm5
I wanted to have a brand-new original ready for SoonerCon in a couple of weeks, so Black Sun Dragon is what I finished up just yesterday.

I used the Caran d'Ache Pablo colored pencils on this piece, and I added a dark jasper stone.  It's a small thing - about 5x8 inches - and it took MUCH longer than it should have...  :O_o:  I'm still learning to use the Pablo pencils; the texture is different from Prismacolors and it took me some time to get the hang of them.

Original art:  sold.

Prints:
5x7 for $10
8x10 for $15
11x14 not available
16x20 not available

Gorgeous, as ever! What inspired switching off of Prismacolor?

I haven't switched off of Prismacolor; I just have started to try other brands to see what they're like.  I've been using Prismas for so long that I didn't have much of an idea about what the other brands are like.  Usually it's a question of, "are they really worth the price they're asking?"  In the case of the Caran d'Ache Pablos, yes.  They're twice as expensive as anything else, but I really like the way they lay down color layers.  I've been experimenting with some of the other brands as well, but so far, Caran d'Ache is among my favorite "alternates".  :D

Hrm, nice to know! Are you ever considering experimenting with paints/oil pastels as well? I could totally see your work in the latter..

I've done my tour of duty in the acrylics, oils, pastels, and oil pastels mediums.  I'm so-so with acrylics, and could probably do well with a bit of practice, and I found oil pastels to be a lot of fun and quite messy.  I never could get the hang of oil paint - I didn't like the smells all that much, and I didn't have a lot of patience for its slow curing time.  Given the option, I always chose acrylics in my collegiate painting classes.  Pastels...  ICK.  My sinuses and pastel dust are a bad combination; that, and I'm very particular about the way that a medium feels when going onto the drawing surface.  Something about pastels just made my skin crawl.  I found them to be just this side of "nails on a chalkboard", so I didn't use them at all if I could get away with it.  :D

Wish I had known about SoonerCon before now because it would have been neat to go.  Your comment was the first I'd heard of it.

It's a pretty small convention - I think it has an attendance of 800 - 1000, and it's in Midwest City, OK every year.  This is my first year visiting it, too.  We have family nearby and are making it a double-trouble visit.  :D

I wish I'd know of it sooner, I'm only a few hours away and would have loved to go to something like that.

Still do not have the money to get ink to cover my scars.  This would be a very visually stunning piece to have done, though.  I think it may be my new favorite.

Thanks very much!  It's quite a compliment when you say you want this guy permanently inked into you, especially with it being such a little project like this.  I'm certainly glad you like it.  :-)

You're welcome very much!

If I'm ever able to manage getting ink done on my chest to cover my scars, it will be something you've done and you would be the first to know.

Your work is awesome and I cannot thank you enough for being so gracious about me wanting to use one of your beautiful images.  You're very kind.

No prob as usuall. I am very curious on how you get the colors to work out, (light) colors aren't all that easy to work with.

With pencils like Caran d'Ache that I used here, I found that I must be careful about how I layer the colors.  I must keep the lightest areas free from color, and then add layers of color with a very soft touch.  I achieve the light parts by leaving the paper to show through the color.

This is different than the way I handle light areas with Prismacolor pencils, though.  With Prismacolors, I can usually color over everything with lighter colors to get the lightest values.  The Prismacolors have a higher wax content, and they squish together really well.  The Caran d'Ache pencils are less waxy and have harder lead, so I use a different blending technique with them.

I see. That is some ritual, but it works out great from the looks of it.

Most of the full-color stuff in my gallery qualifies as my more complex work.  ;-)  Flamma Vitae, for example, is one of the complicated ones:  rachaelm5.deviantart.com/art/F…

How utterly gorgeous! I love the way you've used a combination of riotous colours and lots of complex coils, fins, spikes and different sized scales to make the dragon look extra-complex.

Oh, and the black sun's got a cheeky smile!
