AvP: I STILL WIN lines

Description

Some Predators just never say die. :D

I kept the inking really plain and basic on this one, as a great deal of the work will go in with color - and it's gonna be mostly dark. I've seen John Bolton use the dark-in-the-foreground scheme to great effect on his Aliens and Predator book covers, among other things, and I wanted to try it out for myself. So that's what I'm going to do next - attack the drawing with dark watercolor, then punch in some highlights with colored pencil.

Seems to me that, if you want the dark-to-light drama, one good approach would be to start out with a completely dark panel (either with dark washes or simply using a dark paper or panel). I realize that's sorta what you said, but I was happier with acrylic washes or premade boards for this type of underpainting. I used to use a black-gessoed panel for things like that, but I was working with oils or acrylics. You could do the same thing with gouache and prismacolor, etc. I know Lucy Synk used to do some of that -- in fact, I gave her a bottle of black gesso, waaaay back in the day, when she was talking about wanting to try that approach. I can give tips, if you want to try it. There is also a multi-media art board, a resin-impregnated board, that comes in black (or white) and works pretty well. I used to do space paintings on it a lot, especially, sorta like the reverse-painted pieces, but with a different type of soft feel. Come to think of it, one of my pieces on dA was done on one of those resin boards [link]

Keep havin' fun, Rachel!
